Toberenny marks the exact point where an underground stream breaks through Donegal soil, feeding a small altar and turas station beside Barnes Upper. People still travel from distant towns to complete circuits at this water, sustaining a devotion that may stretch back to St. Columcille. The well does not need grand architecture because the earth itself performs the ritual, hiding its source beneath rock and revealing life only when ready.

Toberenny of the OS 6-inch maps consists of the point where an underground stream reaches the surface. Nearby is a modern altar and turas station. Could this well be the same holy well dedicated to St. Columcille [no. 82] recorded by Ó Muirgheasa in 1936 (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 156)or was there a second holy well in the adjoining townland of Barnes Upper. Ó Muirgheasa recorded that 'there is a little Holy Well in Barne's townland, and people yet come from Doe and Rosgull to make the turus at it. It is believed to have been dedicated to St. Colmcille' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 156). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. Toberenny (An Bearnas Íochtarach) is associated with St. Columba (Columcille), a key figure in early Irish Christianity, and may have been a site of pilgrimage and prayer. The name suggests a connection to a subterranean or hidden well, which was often considered spiritually significant in Celtic tradition.
