What is recorded here
Templevalley parish church lies broken inside a rectangular graveyard on the south side of a forgotten Cork road. Inscribed headstones from the late 18th century still mark the southwest half, while the northeast end has surrendered to overgrowth. A sod-covered rectangular structure sits beneath the church ruins, its purpose unknown and its east end hidden from view. The place has stopped receiving the dead, but it has not stopped holding them.
On S side of road (road not shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map); rectangular graveyard (c. 70m SW-NE; c. 40m NW-SE) enclosed by earthen bank, containing ruins of Templevalley parish church (CO046-039002-) off-centre to NE. No longer in use; some inscribed headstones dating from late 18th century; burials confined to SW half of graveyard; NE end heavily overgrown. To S of church sod-covered remains of rectangular structure (14.5m E-W; 7.5m N-S; max. H0.4m); E end obscured by overgrowth; gap mid-way along N side; function unknown.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
