Church

What is recorded here

Templebodan graveyard marks the ancient parish church, but the older Seana Chill has vanished without a visible trace. Power identified the lost site in 1923, preserving a name that official maps later dropped. The earth keeps both churches buried beside one another, waiting for someone to notice which graves belong to which faith.
Marked only on 1936 OS 6-inch map; according to Power (1923, 196) 'Seana Chill, an early church site'. No visible surface trace. Templebodan graveyard (CO054-106001-) just to N which contained ancient parish church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
