Apley Castle began as a moated fortress for the Charlton family in Hadley, where Thomas Hanmer later defended royalist interests until Parliamentary soldiers stripped its lead roof. The original structure survived the war only to become the stableblock for a grander mansion, then stood abandoned after that second house vanished in 1955. Renovated in 1996, the medieval stable walls now support a private residence, preserving the bloody and domestic layers of one Shropshire valley.
