Subulter holds a four-foot stone that may have watched the fort before the fort had a name. It stands east of the ruined walls, small enough to overlook yet heavy enough to resist forgetting. People may have tied ropes to it, marked boundaries against it, or simply walked past it until rain wore its edges into mystery. What is certain is that it remained when every wooden beam and living memory disappeared.

Bowman (1934, 687) recorded standing stone 'c. 0.3 yards east of the fort (12882). This is now 14in high and 3ft 7in in girth'. Exact location not known.
