Grimsthorpe Castle is a massive country house in Lincolnshire occupied by the de Eresby family since 1516, wearing the disguise of a fortress through its towers and pavilions. Charles Brandon rebuilt it in eighteen months using stone from Vaudey Abbey, creating a grand home ready for Henry VIII just as glacial till beneath began undermining its haste. The house has absorbed royal visits, religious exile and inherited youth, keeping a martial pride that ordinary residences rarely sustain.
