Grimsthorpe Castle is a massive country house in Lincolnshire occupied by the de Eresby family since 1516, wearing the martial silhouette of a fortress though it never fought one. Charles Brandon rebuilt it in eighteen months using stone taken from a dissolved abbey, rushing a grand residence into being before foundations properly settled. The speed still shows in its joints and rooms, as if the house has been bracing itself against the ground for five centuries.
