Inishmurray is a narrow, uninhabited island seven kilometres off County Sligo where Saint Molaise built a monastery in the sixth century before Vikings struck it twice and drove the monks away. Its massive sandstone wall still stands four and a half metres high beside a stone-roofed oratory, two churches, a beehive cell and a holy well, while cross slabs hint at distant influences. The island later supported just over a hundred people in the 1880s, who farmed vegetables, grazed cattle, fished for lobster and may have brewed spirits for nearby shores.
