Markree Castle in County Sligo is the ancestral seat of the Cooper family, partially moated by the River Unshin. The Coopers have lived there since 1663, when Edward Cooper received the castle and surrounding lands. In the 1830s, the castle grounds held an observatory with the largest refracting telescope in the world, where staff discovered the asteroid 9 Metis in the 1840s.
