Half an acre of Shropshire earth still holds the shape of a Norman military hand, planted west of St Michael's church soon after 1066. The motte rises beside its bailey like a clenched fist, while the church stands close enough to suggest that prayer and possession shared one breath. Whatever life moved inside that ring has vanished, but the ground remembers the weight of boots, the smell of wet soil and the sharp edge of a new order.
