Castle Pulverbatch is a Norman motte and bailey castle from the 11th or 12th century, preserving the defensive and administrative purpose of early medieval Shropshire. One hundred metres north-north-west of Brook Cottage, its substantial earthworks still mark the boundary between ordinary countryside and conquered territory. Perhaps a keeper stood on that mound, watching the valley and deciding who lived, worked or left.
