Sheepfold is a ruined stone ringfort on the south face of Tooth Mountain in County Kerry, where a collapsed circular wall still marks a small human dwelling beneath ferns and hill pasture. It belongs to the old cashel tradition, a place where people may have folded sheep, hidden themselves or simply watched the valley change light. The modern wall inside the ancient line suggests the territory kept being claimed, adjusted and remembered long after the first stones fell.
In rough hill pasture, on a terrace of the S-facing slope of Tooth Mountain and within a network of relict field boundaries (KE111-001----). A circular area (16.55m E-W; 16m N-S) defined by the lower courses of a drystone wall (T c. 2.1m; H 0.2-0.6m). Uncoursed rubble facing is visible only in a few areas along the walls, internally and externally. The walls are in a collapsed state with rubble lying along the perimeter. A modern drystone wall (T c. 0.55m; H c. 1.2m) stands on the inner lip of the enclosing wall. Ferns obscure the interior. There is a hut site (KE111-001003-) in the W sector. A further series of relict field boundaries (KE111-001001-) lies to the E.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
