Muness Castle stands on Unst as a sixteenth-century fortified house and lairds residence, perhaps with a formal garden beside it. The exact location is known, but entry is not guaranteed. The structure still belongs to the world of human ambition and local memory, even when nobody climbs its stairs today.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Unst, Muness Castle as Castle (16th Century), Formal Garden (period Unknown)(possible), Fortified House (16th Century), Lairds House (16th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Muness Castle on Unst was built in the late 16th century by the powerful Sinclair family, specifically Patrick Stewart, 3rd Earl of Orkney. It is important as the northernmost castle in the British Isles and as a symbol of the Earls of Orkney's authority in the remote Shetland Islands.
