Indicated

Field system

What is recorded here

Indicated is a vast field system in County Clare stretching thirty-three kilometres from Sladoo to Sheshodonnell West. Irregular walls meander across the uplands, concentrating near ancient tombs and cairns at the southern edge. The stones likely blend prehistoric and medieval hands, creating a living mosaic beneath the scrub.
An extensive field system (c. 3.3km NE-SW; c. 2km NW-SE) stretching from Sladoo at the N to Sheshodonnell West at the S. Irregular meandering walls can be seen on Digital Globe (2011-2013) and on OSi Aerial Premium (2012-2018) all across the area but particular concentrations occur at NE in Sladoo around an enclosure (CL010-230----) and at SW at the border between Fanygalvan and Cahermackirilla townlands where there are several megalithic tombs (CL009-084007-, CL009-084008- and CL009-084009-), cairns (CL009-084010-, CL009-084012- and CL009-084013-) and a stone row (CL009-084006-). The walls are likely to have both medieval and prehistoric elements. Extensive field systems with prehistoric and medieval elements extend over most of the Burren uplands. Those currently visible on aerial or satellite imagery are outlined for mapping purposes but it is likely that they continue under scrub and meet in certain areas.
