House

There is a reference to a ‘Bishop’s house’ in the diary of an officer written during the mid-17th-century Parliamentary army’s campaign in Munster. The entry for 23 May 1650 records that the Royalist-Confederate forces commanded by the earl of Castlehaven were at Killaloe and had ‘demolished the house at Kilaloe called the Bishops house lying on the county of Clare side of the Shanon, and part of it in the water and serving for a strong defence against any attempt by the ford there over the Shanon which is by it’ (Gilbert 1879-80, iii, 230). The precise location of this house is unknown though it clearly stood close to the site of the present bridge. It is possible that this may refer to the ‘castle’ (CL045-033022-) which stood here.
