What is recorded here
Stobo Castle, Walled Garden stands in the Scottish Borders, a fenced enclosure whose age remains unassigned but whose purpose is clear. The wall still marks the boundary between cultivated land and wild terrain, a line drawn by human hands long enough to become landscape. Whether it guarded food, medicine or pride for the castle above, the garden answered a need so strong it survived the forgetting of its makers. The stones do not explain themselves, but they refuse to leave, holding the shape of a life that no longer remembers its own name.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Stobo Castle, Walled Garden as Walled Garden (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Stobo Castle, Walled Garden is associated with the historic Stobo Castle, which was originally built in the 16th century by the Scotts of Buccleuch. The walled garden is remembered as part of the estate's extensive historical landscape, reflecting the agricultural and horticultural practices of the Scottish nobility during the early modern period.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
