Jedburgh Castle stood on an earthen mound above the High Street until Scottish forces demolished the stone structure in 1409, denying English soldiers another border weapon. The discarded mound later held gallows, swallowed trees, and finally wore a jail, turning royal ambition into a chamber for common fear.
