Liddel Castle stands ruined beside the Liddel Water near Castleton, marking the former heart of a barony given to Ranulph de Soules by David I. It vanished from later records after the de Soulis lands passed to Douglas around 1320, leaving behind a quiet stone scar rather than a grand hall. The nearby English Liddel Strength suffered a brutal Scottish attack in 1346, but the Scottish castle itself remains a faint border shadow, remembered more through confusion and loss than through surviving walls.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Liddel Castle as Enclosure (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Liddel Castle was built by the de Liddel family in the 12th or 13th century and is remembered for its strategic role in the border conflicts between England and Scotland.
