Castlehill

Findspot (period Unassigned), Polished Axehead (stone)(neolithic)

What is recorded here

Castlehill Tower rose on a rocky knoll above the Manor Water to guard a ford, its thick basement walls and hidden stair still marking the footprint of a home that changed hands from the Lowis of Manor to the Earl of March. A polished Neolithic axehead has also been lost there, suggesting people worked the same steep ground long before stone towers rose. The building may have had three storeys and a garret, but only parts of the ground and first floors remain, leaving the upper rooms imagined through gaps in the wall.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlehill as Findspot (period Unassigned), Polished Axehead (stone)(neolithic). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
