St. Mary’s and the Black Abbey hold similar panels, but this one is from St. Francis' Abbey. The story is a side panel from a dead man’s box, cut with a claw chisel and decorated with two pointed trefoil arches. It is small, barely large enough for a child’s bedroom chest, yet it belonged to someone important enough to bury in stone rather than dirt. The gardens have taken it back from the abbey, freeing it from the dead man but losing the name of the hand that cut it.

In St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-). A limestone panel (L 0.38m; H 0.24m; D 0.14m) decorated with two pointed trefoil arches in low relief. It is dressed with vertical tooling using a claw chisel (Duffy 2025, no. 4). Duffy suggests it is a side panel from a sarcophagus, similar to examples in St Mary’s parish church and the Black Abbey (ibid.). Bradley (1980, 15, no. 57) describes a similar panel from St Francis’ Abbey (KK019-026550-) as being ‘probably part of a table tomb’. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
