What is recorded here

Death in childhood struck often in ancient times, and families needed a place to lay the small bodies to rest. They dug shallow holes, covered the children with earth, and walked home broken. The ground absorbed the loss and waited for centuries beneath the grass. What feels empty may simply be listening.
