Barrow

Barrow, ditch barrow

What is recorded here

In rough grazing, close to a break of slope at the E end of a ridge. A low circular flat-topped rise (diam. c. 5m; H c. 0.3m), engulfed in rushes. A silted-up fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2m), noted during a previous site inspection in 1993 (SMR (1989) file), is now possibly masked by a dense growth of rushes. This is one of a group of four barrows (see SL047-048001-; SL047-048002-; SL047-048004-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
Ditch barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its presence indicates a funerary or ritual landscape feature associated with early burial practices in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
