Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathmoyle

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mound and ditch still circle Rathmoyle, a twenty-seven metre ring marked by earthen bank and western fosse. No entrance survives to show where people entered or left. The shape excludes rather than invites, as if the fort were built around absence instead of life.
In undulating countryside. A circular area (diam. c. 27m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2.6m, int. H c. 0.5m, ext. H c. 1.8m) and fosse (Wth c. 3.8m) at W. No evidence of original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
