Marianne on that sea was no passive girl. She wanted to know what the waves kept, so she watched the tide leave behind broken things and asked what they were. That is the origin of the local study, not a claim that she completed a modern survey. The chamber should preserve her question, because the sea still answers people who stop treating it like a background.
