Crickhowell Castle rose from a fifteen-metre earthen mound in the River Usk valley, transforming from a wooden shelter into a stone fortress before Owain Glyndŵr’s rebels sacked it in 1403. The destruction broke its momentum, prompting later owners to strip the walls for building material rather than maintain the defences. Today only a fragment of the two-tower complex and the shadow of the original mound remain, inviting visitors to imagine the heat of hearths and the echo of footsteps within chambers that no longer exist.
