Crickhowell Castle rose on a sharp Welsh spur where a small stream joins the Usk, making the town cluster beneath it like a shadow. Norman builders shaped the earth and stone, Welsh rebels struck back, and later marcher lords turned the place into a weapon for crown and conquest. Much of the castle is buried or gone now, but the oval mound still stands above the field, waiting for the lost rooms to be imagined around it.

Built by the Normans in the 12th century, Crickhowell Castle was held by the De Clifford family, who played a significant role in the region's medieval defense and administration. It is remembered for its strategic position in controlling the Usk Valley and its association with key events during the Welsh Wars.
