Hay Castle is a medieval ringwork and Jacobean mansion in Hay-on-Wye that has been attacked, burnt and rebuilt since the Norman advance. The de Braose family strengthened the earthworks in stone around 1200, but King John, Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, Simon de Montfort and Owain Glyndŵr all came through with fire or siege. What began as a border weapon became a private home, then a ruined shadow beside the town, and now a restored place for learning.

Hay Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Say family, later held by the powerful Mortimer family, and is remembered for its strategic role in controlling the borderlands between England and Wales. It is important as a well-preserved example of a medieval border castle and for its historical association with key figures in the Wars of the Roses.
