Fulacht fia in Park (carra By.)

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

In lowlying, damp pasture, flanked c. 50m to W and c. 100m to E by gently rising, drier ground. This fulacht fia was levelled in the past, and there are no surface indications of the mound. During pre-development archaeological testing (17E0324) in July/August 2017, part of the fulacht fia was uncovered in a test trench. The exposed portion was evident as a spread (8m NW-SE; 3.8-4.3m NE/SW) of heat-shattered stones in a matrix of black, charcoal-rich soil. No further excavation took place; the fulacht fia was covered and a buffer zone was implemented to exclude it from the proposed development (Pers. comm. R. Crumlish, 2017).
