Orchard Lower hides a standing stone that no longer has a visible mark, though H. Roe wrote it into early Laois settlements. It may have guided livestock, warned travellers, or simply watched the fields grow and fall. The stone still belongs to the land even when the hand that placed it has forgotten its own name.
