Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

Lea in County Laois is not empty so much as unfinished, a town that kept giving way to water, fire and forgetting. It rose around a castle, attracted soldiers and suppliers, burned under siege, and thinned until only plots and doubt remained. The ash tree marked one recovery and stood long enough for festivals to orbit it before decay took even that witness. What is left is a field that remembers being a town, holding its shape just long enough to resist final judgement.
Unlocated settlement within townland that is indicated on the 1563 Map of Leix and Offaly which shows three houses in a cluster in Olderrig. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
