Old Quay is a lost harbour hidden beneath the salt marsh at Little Neston, built in 1541 to rescue Chester from its drowning port. The kingdom sent two hundred trees from its own woods to build the haven, yet no map ever marked the place where they fell. Lightfote Pole vanished so completely that even the men who married into the local families forgot the water they had helped create.

Located on the Mullet Peninsula, on the shoreline on the S side of Elly Harbour. This quay was associated with Bingham Castle house (MA024-002001-), built in the late 1700’s/early 1800’s. When inspected in 1995, it was found that the quay had been almost completely destroyed by wave action. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 28 January 2015
