Vercovicium stands as Housesteads Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, built in stone around AD 124 to hold the northern edge of Britannia. The garrison cycled through auxiliary cohorts and legionary detachments until the Roman withdrawal near AD 400, leaving behind a civil settlement where two skeletons lay beneath a newly laid floor. The northern defences collapsed and rebuilt repeatedly, suggesting a place where stone itself resisted the demand to stay upright.
