Bothal Castle stands beside the River Wansbeck as a medieval gate tower and surviving curtain wall, transformed from a manor house in 1343 when Sir Robert Bertram received permission to build a true castle. The Ogle family later inherited the estate, and in 1583 Cuthbert Ogle negotiated a marriage that brought outside agents to describe the place as a battled castle rather than an ordinary hall. King James stayed two nights there in 1617, proving the house could host the greatest guest in England without losing its quiet northern dignity.
