Haw Hill in Northumberland still carries a motte and bailey castle, marked as a scheduled monument though no visible tower or gate remains. The land may have hidden a wooden hall, a defending bank and a household that turned the hill into a small centre of power. Listing protects the memory of that lost building, but it does not promise entry or reveal whether the hill still holds a chamber, a cellar or a room waiting to be remembered.
