Aydon Castle rose from a wooden hall into a stone fortress on a Northumberland bluff, built by Robert de Raymes to defend his home against Scottish raids. The castle survived repeated attacks until English raiders stripped it of every usable piece of wood, leaving behind a ruined mansion that its owner could no longer afford to maintain.
