Rubha Mòr is a basaltic sea cliff or headland formed during the Tertiary period, approximately 60 to 55 million years ago, as a result of volcanic activity associated with the North Atlantic Igneous Province. It is notable for its dramatic coastal exposure of columnar jointing, a common feature of ancient lava flows in the Western Isles.
