What is recorded here

Monk bones may still lie beneath the provincial bank in Mullaghmonaghan, lost beside a holy well that has vanished from human memory. English soldiers killed the monastery community in either 1540 or 1589, and the men were buried nearby. The exact spot has slipped away, leaving only a bank lobby where quiet water once marked sacred ground.
According to a note in the IFC Schools MSS (957, 157), 'the monks from the monastery, murdered by English soldiers in either 1540 or 1589 are thought to be buried near the holy well which was on the site of the present provincial bank'. Its precise location is not known. See this web-page accessed on 12/12/2017: https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4742056/4731389 Date of revised upload: 14 December 2017
