Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mullaghfarna is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Mullaghfarna, County Sligo, Ireland. The site occupies pasture on an east-facing slope where only the western half remains visible as a twenty-one-metre earthen arc. This surviving bank stands one point three metres high externally and shows traces of a silted-up external fosse beside it.
In pasture, on an E-facing slope. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area immediately SW of a field boundary and on the 1914 OS 6-inch map as an arc of hachures S-WNW. Only the W half of the rath is now evident as an arc (C 21m) of earthen bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.3m) with traces of a silted-up external fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
