Straw Cave lies at Muckross in County Kerry, a small hole in the earth that may have given shelter when storms closed the sky. Whether people entered it to escape rain or to hide from others, the cave still holds that old purpose: a dark place where the living world stopped mattering. Its name suggests something temporary, as if straws were pushed across the mouth to mark it or keep out water. The cave does not need legend because it is already a legend in the shape of a hole.
