Kiln

Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'Kiln'. In elevated undulating pasture, built into a drystone wall (long axis NE-SW) which encloses the base of the cairn of a wedge tomb (SL034-208001-) immediately to NW. A D-shaped kiln (1.35m SW-NE; 1.2m SE-NW; H 1.3m) of rubble limestone. The bowl of the kiln (diam. top 1.75m; wall T 0.6m; H top to base 0.6m) has vertical sides and is slightly in-turned at the top where there is a course of level rubble stone. The mouth of the kiln, which is rectangular in shape (Wth 0.7m; H 0.5m; D to rear wall 0.6m), faces SE away from the cairn of the wedge tomb. It has a lintelled top and sides of rough limestone rubble. The rear wall of the fire pit is vertical and the raking hole is now obscured by earth and rubble. This is probably post-1700 AD in date.
