Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

Medieval Lea vanished beneath low-lying fields after repeated invasion and abandonment, leaving only ambiguous earthworks beside its castle. For a moment it hosted royal armies, busy camp followers and fortified rule, but by the early fourteenth century most of its town plots had fallen empty. The ground itself seemed resistant to memory: wet, shifting, difficult to keep. What was once a living borough became a rumor in the soil, remembered more through loss than streets.
According to O'Heerin's fifteenth century document which describes 'five acres of arrable land in the Towne and fieldes of Garriknayre in the said Monteagh' (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 44) Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
