Usk Castle rose in 1120 on a hill above the town, marking the border where Norman ambition met Welsh resistance. The castle changed hands repeatedly, absorbing the violence of the Marches until Owain Glyndŵr's rebellion ended its military purpose. That sudden peace turned a weapon into a residence, allowing the gatehouse to become a home rather than a battleground. The stones still stand beside ordinary life, remembering both the danger and the relief that stopped the fighting.
