Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mohernagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for people, the warning says. Yet Mohernagh keeps a shallow circular scar in the pasture, likely human-made and now reduced to a low rise. The field boundary that cut the ring is gone, leaving the ghost of an enclosure behind. Whatever lived there has been forgotten, but the shape still resists complete erasure.
In undulating pasture, on gentle N-facing slope. Monument, depicted on 1923 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure truncated on W side by field boundary, has been levelled and field boundary removed. However, site now evident as sub-circular area (22.8m N-S; 24m E-W) enclosed by low rise (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.2m; Wth 2m). Faint trace of external fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 2.5m) NW->SW and counterscarp bank (H 0.1m; Wth 1.5m) SE->S. Entire site under posture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
