Mill

O'Curry, writing in 1837, refers to having seen a small mill dam on a tributary stream of the Dodder, near where that stream crosses the road (ed. Flanagan 1927, 40-1). The mill itself was incorporated into a nearby cabin, within which was located the “smallest and oldest mill” the author had ever seen (Flanagan 1927, 41). While the mill itself was of a more relatively recent date date, a piece of a far older grinding stone was incorporated into one of the walls, and the perpendicular butment was also of an earlier date (ibid). Scantlebury refers to Aengus the Culdee as having worked in the kiln and mill of the monastery while in disguise (1953, 67). Whether or not this is the same mill cannot be ascertained on the present evidence. The possible millstone (DU021-037007-) may also be related.The precise location of this monument is unknown.
