Castle Knowe holds first world war slit trenches cut into the Midlothian landscape. Steel rails and wooden supports may have reinforced the digging while young soldiers watched for gunfire above the soil. The trench remains a sharp reminder that ordinary ground can preserve the fear and labour of wartime.
