Memento mori, little Samuel Barinton, clock and chime maker. He measured other men's hours until November 1693, when death stopped his own watch. His son Benjamin set the plaque near the south entrance, forcing every hurried visitor to remember that even timekeepers must surrender their clocks to God.

17th century graveslab in St. Mary's Cathedral (LI005-017015-) described in the Urban Survey of Limerick (Bradley et. al. 1989, 323-4) as following; ‘Wall memorial. Samuel Barinton 1693. Plaque on a pillar near the south entrance: ’MEMENTO MORY/ HERE LEITH LITTELE SAMVELL/ BARINTON THAT GREAT VNDER/ TAKER OF FAMIOVS GIFTES/ CLOCK AND CHIME MAKER/ HE MADE HIS ONE TIME GOE/ EARLY AND LATER, BVT NOW/ HE IS RETURNED TO GOD HIS CREA/ TOR/ THE 19 OF NOVEMBER THEN HE/ SCEST, AND FOR HIS MEMORY/ THIS HERE IS PLEAST BY HIS/ SON BEN 1693 (Fitzgerald 1910, 132-3)'.
