Man-made underground passage in Meenahony

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Meenahony holds a man-made underground passage inside a ringfort, though collapsed ground now hides the entrance. The passage may have served as a souterrain, providing storage or refuge beneath the fort wall. People likely walked its dark length during storms or kept food safe from raiders. What remains is a broken surface and a missing hole, waiting for someone careful enough to listen for the shape beneath the soil.
In ringfort (CO050-070001-). Collapsed ground in interior may indicate presence ofsouterrain. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
