Gibraltar is a castellated miniature fort with five battlemented towers and circular gun-holes on one of two islands in a Meath lake. It probably appeared just before or during the famous British defence, turning a quiet water world into a stage for gun smoke and trembling ropes. Children may have crept across its stones while adults listened for distant cannons, believing the small towers could hold back a whole invasion.
