Rucklagh Fort

Thirty-two metres of packed earth still rise above the Mayo pasture, though a laneway has swallowed the outer ditch and reshaped the boundary into a field fence. The fort keeps its circular form while blackthorn chokes the interior and uncertain stones protrude from a hidden hollow near the western bank. It is a place where human hands kept returning, changing the shape of the ancient work without erasing it, until the original purpose became harder to see than the new uses built upon it.
