Rathmacostello

Rathmacostello is a low earthen ring on a gentle Mayo rise, its name preserved on maps since 1838 and its identity so complete that townland and monument became one. The inner bank still carries regularly set stones at the north and northwest, hinting at a formal kerb beneath soil and age, while a narrow northeast gap marks the entrance a family may have used for centuries. Outside, a second bank curves along the ridge above wet pasture, perhaps part of the original defence or perhaps a later field boundary wearing the shape of something older. The place does not announce itself; it waits to be walked, touched, and imagined.
